Sprints and Supers head show Sat.

Marysville CA - April 16, 2014... Paul and Kathy Hawes’ Marysville Raceway Park will host a thrilling four division show this Saturday night. The MRP Winged Sprint Cars will headline the program in their third appearance of the season. For stock car fans the MRP Super Stocks and MRP Mini Stocks will compete in some fender rubbing championship point racing competition as well. The Pro 4 Sprint Cars will also be on the card.

In the MRP Winged Sprint Car division, three-time and defending champion Billy Wallace from Grass Valley has had a tough couple of races. Three-time champion Colby Wiesz of Colfax won on opening night and finished a close 2nd last week. The 2007 MRP Champ, Grass Valley ’s Jeremy Burt, won last week with Wiesz breathing down his neck for the last few circuits and was 3rd on opening night. Paradise driver John Michael Bunch has really been on the gas and has a 2nd and a 3rd in his first two starts. Wallace however has uncharacteristically labored with mid-field finishes and is 6th in points.

Among others, another former champion, Mike Monahan out of Sparks Nevada, had a difficult night last week and was involved in a spectacular crash on the opening lap last Saturday. Monahan is among the most aggressive of the participants and will look to improve his position Saturday night. Five-time champ Korey Lovell of Yuba City and twin brother Kevin Lovell also from Yuba City have had rocky starts to the new season as well.

Other top-notch drivers who have not had the starts they had hoped for include Woodland ’s Peter Paulson and Marysville’s Cort and Brandon Dozier. Husband and wife racers Raquel and Heath Hall of Oroville will be trying for the up front finishes they are capable of. Rookie contender Marysville’s own Jeremy Hawes will be back after a 6th place finish on opening night. But, he was caught up in the six car opening lap crash last Saturday. Auburn’s Jimmy Steward was also involved in that crash and endured knee injuries that will sideline the speedster for at least a couple of months.

The MRP Super Stocks are loaded with local talent including Yuba City championship contenders Phillip Shelby and Cory Hall. Hall won convincingly last week while Shelby grabbed the point lead with a pair of consistent finishes. Marysville’s Cort and Rick Dozier and a very quick James Castleberry, among others, will be looking for their first trips to victory lane. Double duty star Cort Dozier will saddle up in his Super Stock as will brother Rick Dozier who has had a fast reunion with speed since returning to racing. Cort is a champion in sprint car and stock car classes at MRP.

The MRP Mini Stocks will be led by championship point leader James Foster of Linda. Foster was relentless in his last outing and beat Yuba City ’s Jimmy Ford and former champion Misty Castleberry to the flag in a thriller. Defending champion Shaun Merritt of Marysville did not start the feature last time out. Look for Merritt to be ready for action this week.

Defending champion, local lady racing star, Misty Castleberry will lead the Pro 4 Sprint contingent for their second visit to MRP this season. Gates open at 5pm with racing getting underway at 6:30pm.
