Dothage does it!
Maclaughlin, Castleberry and Magenheimer also win.

By Bob Burbach
Marysville CA - May 13, 2012 --- 3 time MRP champ Brent Dothage went wire to wire in a brilliant performance Saturday night in the featured MRP Performance Auto Supply Winged Sprint car feature at Paul and Kathy Hawes Marysville Raceway Park. Misty Castleberry easily outdistanced the MRP Mini Stock field as Tim Maclaughlin and Matt Magenheimer grabbed the trophies in the Pro 4 and Hobby Stock features.

The MRP Performance Auto Supply Winged Sprint car feature went caution free, but not before veteran campaigner Robby Hight took the scariest ride of the year at the opening green. Hight, who started 9th, got mixed up with David Derr as the original green flag flew. Hight’s car dug in at the flag stand and started a vicious series of flips that landed him on the infield barrier in turn 1. After an anxious moment or two Hight wobbled away from his badly bent car.

The restart saw Dothage pull to as much as a straightaway lead as championship contenders Jeremy Burt and Billy Wallace slugged it out with the rest of the field trying to break clear and go after the high flying Dothage. Fellow front row starter Peter Paulson was near-brilliant as he held them off, but at the same time kept Dothage in sight.

With 5 to go Wallace finally eclipsed Paulson and went after Dothage. Wallace closed rapidly on the leader, but simply ran out of time as he had to settle for 2nd as the checkered flag flew. Paulson stayed 3rd as Burt and John Michael Bunch rounded out the top 5. Dothage and Paulson picked up heat race victories in non stop sprint car heat racing action.

In the MRP Mini Stock feature 10th starting Misty Castleberry racked up another feature event. Castleberry systematically picked off cars on her way to the front exhibiting patience as the field raced hard in front of her. Once again rookie contender Travis Carter found the leads early and stayed ahead of a monstrous battle between Derik Gallier, Damian Merritt and Kyle Davey.

By half way Castleberry had made her way to the front and Carter gave her the bottom in turn 1. That was “all she wrote” as Castleberry beat the quartet behind her by a wide margin. Carter was 2nd followed by Gallier, Merritt and Davey. Castleberry and a revitalized Erik Davey were heat race winners.

The Pro 4 feature could be characterized as simply weird. Early race leader Joel Giusti succumbed to mechanical gremlins and Cort Dozier pretty much 2-wheeled his “Flyin’ Ford” around the track just behind. After Giusti pulled off, Dozier suddenly slowed handing yet another win to defending champ Tim Maclaughlin. Maclaughlin was probably the most surprised guy in the place when he received the checkers just in front of a charging Misty Castleberry. Castleberry, doing double duty stayed 2nd followed Johnny Burns. Dozier limped into 4th at the end. Castleberry grabbed the heat race honors.

The MRP Hobby Stocks capped off the night as Matt Magenheimer dominated the race after jumping to an early lead. New comer to MRP Brian Compton charged into 2nd, but ran out of time while closing on Magenheimer. Willy wolf was 3rd and opening night winner Garrett Agnew grabbed 3rd just ahead of another newcomer to MRP Eddie Hemmett. Wolf won the heat race.

Next week the mighty Performance Auto Supply Winged Sprint Cars will return. In advance of the California Sprint Car Civil War Series Mel Hall Memorial Race on Saturday May 26th some heavy duty sprint car chauffeurs are expected to be in the house tuning up for MRP’s premiere event. More on this later including a monster post race barbeque offered by the folks at and a "pile o' meat" for the barbecue to be provided by promoter Paul Hawes.

This Winged 360 Sprint Car show Saturday will be Red Horse Night at the raceway and a Contingency Connection event. It is the 4th Contingency Connection offering for the 2012 season in the Performance Auto Supply Winged Sprint Cars. Feature event bonus awards will be available to the winner with Contingency Connection sponsorship decals displayed by the winning driver. The bonuses will be awarded at the track. Winning racers in the Contingency Connection average some $1500 in Contingency Connection bonuses weekly this year. The Pro 4 Sprinters will complete the open wheeled part of the show. The MRP Mini Stocks and the Nor Cal Dwarf Cars will also be back to the MRP clay in the slam bang 4 division show.

Life’s short. Live it. Race hard.
