New Yearís Day Playday ready to roll.
Schedule is posted.
By Bob Burbach
Marysville CA - December 28, 2011 --- Marysville Raceway Parkís annual gathering on New Yearís Day is ready to roll. The event is always in the weathermanís hands, but at this writing the days preceding the event look to be dry and in the 60s with New Yearís Day clear and 62!! It can always change, but once again it looks as if promoter Paul Hawes and his entourage will slip in this annual meeting of motor heads in.

Past New Yearís Day events have been great fun and will allow all of us to catch up on whatís going on. Car and driver are $25.00. A pit pass (alone) is $10.00. All minors admitted to the pits must have a 2012 minor's release signed that day by a parent. Touchy stuff with the insurance companies these daysÖso do it right or you canít get a minor into the pits. Grandstands are free.

Itís a casual day and the pit gate will open at 11AM. The track will be open at noon for hot laps in every division (maybe a bit earlier depending on how the track comes in). The concession stand will be open with a limited menu and plenty of hot coffee.

Promoter Hawes has put the finishing touches on the 2012 schedule with an emphasis on the MRP local classes. Of course the wildly popular Performance Auto Supply MRP Winged Sprint Cars will be the premiere division and present another full season of wicked-fast sprint car racing. Marysville Raceway Parkís car counts in 2011 season were the highest in that division. Promoter Hawes is working feverishly on the MRP surface and configuration to maintain the spectacular multi-groove racing showcased so often in late season action last year.

The 3rd Sherm Toller Classic will kick off the season on March 3rd. The seasonís first race and the only race scheduled for that date will bring a fine field of Winged and Wingless sprinters to open the 44th MRP season.

Promoter Hawes has welcomed back the California Sprint Car Civil War Series for 2012; Californiaís premiere winged 360 sprint car series. MRP will host round 1 of the series on March 17th. The great Mel Hall Memorial Race will also now be a Civil War event for the 1st time in its history. The Hall race has traditionally been a MRP points championship event. This year in Melís honor it will be a Civil War race. Hall was one of the originators of the Civil War Series when he first presented it at the now defunct Ernie Purssell Speedway in Grass Valley.

The roaring Super Stocks and MRP Mini Stocks will again present full seasons of competition as well. The Pro 4 Sprinters will also be at MRP in 2012.

Special shows featuring the King of the West 410 sprint cars, the Joe Hunt Magneto Wingless Sprint Car Shootout and the BCRA full Midgets are on tap. The 17th edition of the West Coast Dwarf Car Nationals along with Gene Romeroís flat track motorcycles will be offered for the 1st time in late season clashes.

This year the schedule shows fewer divisions being presented weekly. Good things happen when that happens: promoter Hawes will save the track and MRP will conclude its program in a time frame that allows everyone to experience the featured attractions with plenty of evening to spare. With more and more families involved, MRP will be a very fan-friendly place to be. Promoter Hawes has also listened to the drivers and car owners who have said that getting back home at a reasonable hour after a night of racing will be a real plus!

It cannot be said enough that a continued heavy emphasis on our primary classes will be foremost on the list. While the quality of the touring dates has improved fewer events have been scheduled. Promoter Hawes has a very healthy weekly winged 360 program in place, last year offering over $4,000 in cash and prizes to the champion. The rejuvenated Super Stock class is a fan favorite and the MRP Minis continue to be the fastest fendered 4 bangers presented anywhere. With new Pro 4s being built for that class, they look for a strong 2012.

A big buzz is being heard in the fendered ranks as promoter Hawes has penned in several Limited Late Model dates. Late model racing has been presented only sparingly at MRP since the final championship point season concluded in 1994. Throughout the 80ís and particularly in the early Ď90s, Late model stock car racing was the premiere attraction at MRP. 2 of the dates will book end the fendered season at MRP with special shows. Additional mid-season dates will showcase the Limited Lates on tour. As a guest of MRP in our late season Taxi Cab Open this year they put on a great show.

More on all of this later. Letís talk Sunday. Bring your hot rods and turn some wheels in anger. Weíll see you on New Yearís Day at MRP! Remember, grandstands are FREE!!!!
