KKCY "Country 103 Cup" jump-starts big June at MRP

Promoter Paul Hawes announced that local country radio station KKCY has come on board and created the Country 103 Cup for the MRP Stock Cars and the MRP Mini Stocks. The sponsorship will kick off with the annual Mel Hall Memorial Race being staged this Saturday. The month will go out like a lion, as the Merritt Brothers Racing Team will again showcase KIDZ NITE on June 30.
The Country 103 Cup will be the new name associated with MRP’s two fendered point divisions. The sponsorship will include the entire balance of the 2007 season. In addition to promoting the races, results and commentary will be heard on the Yuba City based station. The ball seems to be rolling at MRP as more and more significant sponsors are taking a good look at the benefits of being involved with Yuba Sutter’s only professional sports program. This Saturday night the annual Mel Hall Memorial Race will be presented. All four of the primary divisions will be offered. The winged Pacific Sprint Cars will headline the show. The wingless warriors of the MRP Wingless Sprint Car Series will also present a full card, as will the KKCY Mini Stocks and the KKCY Stock Cars as they continue to vie for the prestigious Country 103 Cup in both divisions. The BCRA Midget Lites will also be at the Mel Hall Memorial Race.
More than 100 cars are expected for this annual renewal of one of MRP’s premiere racing events. This year promoter Paul Hawes will present the long awaited plaque commemorating Hall’s efforts in local racing promotions to Marlyn Hall. Marlyn and son Mark carried on after Mel’s untimely passing through the 2002 season promoting events here. Mark Hall is a 2 time Champion in the Pacific Sprint Car class at MRP. He also wore the title three times at Grass Valley’s Ernie Purssell Speedway. Mark Hall is expected to compete in Saturday’s race. It, surprisingly, is one of the few races he has not been victorious in. Saturday’s event, as always, will be an MRP point race.
On Saturday night June 30 the Merritt Brothers Racing Team will sponsor the annual KIDZ NITE at MRP. This year a host of valuable prizes will be given away. A DVD player, T-shirts provided by Trik Concepts and 10 Thrills & Spills DVDs will be among the multitude of giveaways offered for the kids. All kids under 12 are free at the grandstand.
